Project: Temporary Replacement Classrooms to Enable School Redevelopment | Location: Turner Free School, Tile Kiln Lane, Folkestone | Date: April 2019
The project was for the erection of a number of modular build classrooms on an existing school site, to enable the redevelopment of the existing school buildings for a new purpose-built secondary school. The modular build classrooms were required for a temporary period of two years to allow pupils and teaching staff to decant whilst the redevelopment of the existing school buildings takes place on the site.
The site was quite tight being hemmed in by existing residential properties along the site boundary on three sides. This presented a number of logistical problems as there needed to be a secure construction site which wasn’t accessible to children, which restricted where the modular classrooms could be located. In addition, we also had to be mindful of the impact of classrooms on the amenities of surrounding residents. Great care was taken in the design process to ensure that the construction site and the teaching site were properly segregated to ensure the health and safety of all on site. The layout also ensured that the impact on adjoining residents was minimised whilst still being able to facilitate teaching on site.
Planning Permission was granted for a temporary two-year period for the modular classrooms to enable pupils to still be taught on site whilst the existing school buildings were redeveloped for a new permanent school.
